Malerie Marder
Salon 94, in collaboration with Artemis Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, NY, is pleased to announce the second New York solo exhibition by Malerie Marder. The show will feature the artist’s debut film, At Rest, 2003 (DVD with sound, 12 minutes and 20 seconds) and a complimentary suite of portrait photographs. The exhibition is on view from February 9 – March 12, 2003.

In At Rest, Marder edited footage shot over two years in various locations – LA, New York, Paris, and London, among others - of mostly nude friends and family in various states of rest: the artist’s father asleep, couples in bed, a child slouched on a pillow. Marder says that she “started the (film) by thinking about how the subconscious can have physical manifestations in the body that you can see if you look closely enough; how desire can be manifested without anything sexual happening, or any discomfort; how rest is a transient state between sleep and wakefulness, and wondering what the difference is between those states.” Jonathan Bepler, best known for composing the sound for Matthew Barney’s Cremaster films, produced the soundtrack, which transforms organic sounds like breathing and heartbeats into a meditative arrangement. “I think in a way that for the first time I’m exploring the body,” Marder adds. “Before, I thought about things like privacy and eroticism. This time my approach is more psychological, spiritual.”

Malerie Marder was born in Philadelphia, 1971, and educated at Bard College (B.F.A.) and and Yale University (M.F.A.). She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She has had solo exhibitions at Artemis Greenberg Van Doren Galley, NY; The Photographers Gallery, London; and Maureen Paley / Interim Art, London. Her photographs are in the collections of the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, and have been published in Artforum, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker, among others.
